Experience the vibrant spirit and transformative power of Latinx dance as Ballet Hispánico takes the stage for a breathtaking showcase presented as part of the Ogle Center’s 30th Anniversary Season. Recognized as the largest Latino cultural organization in the United States and designated one of America’s Cultural Treasures, Ballet Hispánico has spent more than 50 years bringing communities together through dance, education, and meaningful cultural conversation. Under the leadership of Artistic Director & CEO Eduardo Vilaro, the company brings a roster of world-class dancers representing diverse backgrounds from across the United States and abroad to celebrate the beauty, richness, and complexity of the Hispanic and Latino diasporas. This special presentation is brought to the community with support from Patty Cress and in partnership with IU Auditorium.
The program features an extraordinary selection of pieces from Ballet Hispánico’s acclaimed repertory, showcasing the ensemble’s rare ability to execute a diverse range of dance styles with technical brilliance and passion. Audiences will be swept away by Pedro Ruiz’s “Club Havana,” an exhilarating portrait of 1950s Cuban nightlife filled with the intoxicating rhythms of mambo, cha-cha, conga, and rumba, as well as his finely structured work “Guajira.” The showcase also highlights Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s “Línea Recta,” a powerful work that reimagines traditional flamenco partnering set to fiery guitar music, alongside dynamic performances of “Trança” and “Otra Vez, Otra Vez, Otra Vez.”
More than just a performance, this event invites audience members to actively participate in the celebration. Complementing the repertory works is an interactive Latin social dance experience led by Rodney Hamilton, bringing the movement off the stage and giving guests the chance to experience the joy of dance firsthand. Whether you are a lifelong patron of the arts or discovering the company for the first time, this event promises a rich, unforgettable celebration of culture, storytelling, and community.
There are few dance companies as versatile as Ballet Hispánico... whose dancers, thanks to their training, can truly execute a diversity of genres comfortably and without compromising the integrity of each style.
