Inspired by a true story and featuring the Tony®-nominated score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, Broadway’s BRIGHT STAR tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ’40s. When literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past—and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives. With beautiful melodies and powerfully moving characters, the story unfolds as a rich tapestry of deep emotion. An uplifting theatrical journey that holds you tightly in its grasp, BRIGHT STAR is as refreshingly genuine as it is daringly hopeful.
It’s Martin and Brickell’s music that’s the brightest star in BRIGHT STAR.... Americana music with layered harmonies and beautiful use of banjo and fiddle.... there are stirring ballads and toe-tapping numbers throughout.
— Entertainment Weekly
… a significant, distinctive and artful entry into the Broadway repertory.
— Chicago Tribune
… a heartwarming and crowd-pleasing musical, sporting many pleasant country songs, a sunny disposition and a Southern Gothic flavor.
— AM New York
BRIGHT STAR is… downright wonderful — a multichambered sweetheart of an original that Steve Martin and Edie Brickell created for Broadway.
— Newsday
BRIGHT STAR is a spoonful of southern sugar.
— Washington Post
Steve Martin is famous for wild-and-crazy antics. But in his debut as a Broadway author and composer, he drops the arrow-through-the-head zaniness. He and co-writer Edie Brickell aim straight for the heart in a new musical about love, loss, family and forgiveness… it’s sweet and tender… Martin and Brickell’s bluegrassy score is mellow and pretty.
